10:00-3:00 HistoryThe public library traces its beginnings to three organizations; 1800's Village Library Association which collected some two hundred books and housed them in a lawyer's office, then in the home of one of the members.1875 The Reform Club built a building and established a library for its members and others who would pay a fee. After 1885 these two libraries languished and Bridgton Academy secured the Village Library Association's collection. In 1903, the Wyonegonic Club was formed and made it their business to retrieve the books at Bridgton Academy and from the Reform Club collection. By the end of 1905, with some additional books from the State Library and some donated locally, they opened a library in a room on the second floor of the Reform Club building. In 1906 they incorporated the Harrison Public Library Association. The Great Fire of 1907 destroyed the Reform Club Building, but the collection was saved, and housed for awhile in a private home. The Association acquired the property formerly occupied by the Reform Club, sold it, bought the site formerly occupied by the Calvin Baptist Church and began a fund drive for a new building. In 1908, a generous gift from Daniel H. Caswell enabled construction and the present day stone structure was completed in February 1909. The names by which the building and institution were known seem to have been more or less interchangeable until 1947. In 1947 the trustees decided the matter by legally changing the name to "Caswell Public Library." Borrower's InformationTwo week circulation on books. No overdue
