Location: The Health Information Library is located on the first floor of the Ripley Medical Building. When entering the front doors of the Ripley Building, climb the flight of stairs to the left of the lobby. At the top of the stairs, turn right through the doorway, and proceed up the hall to the sign stating "Health Information Library" and "Western Mountain Ophthalmology." Turn right at this sign. The Health Information Library is the first door on the left.

History

The Health Information Library of Stephens Memorial Hospital was established through a grant awarded by the Betterment Fund of the Bingham Foundation, and through support from the 1994 Annual Fund of Western Maine Health Care. The Library opened in June, 1996, with two end-user computer workstations, a circulating book and video collection, twenty different consumer health magazines/newsletters/journals, and an extensive health pamphlet collection. The resources are multimedia in format, and are intended for use by the general public. The Health Information Library is a separate library from the Stephens Memorial Hospital Medical Library.

Mission Statement

The Stephens Memorial Hospital Health Information Library provides the general public with free access to current medical and health information. The multimedia materials encompass the health concerns of men, women and children, and accommodate all levels of literacy and health information needs. The information services provided by the Health Information Library are in conjunction with the vision/value statements of Stephens Memorial Hospital and its parent corporation, Western Maine Health.

Borrower's Information

The book and video collections are circulating: books may be signed out for a two week period, with renewal available; videos may be signed out for a one week period. Photocopying is available within the Library. Newsletters, journals/magazines are non-circulating.

The Health Information Library is considered a special library with a collection focused on the consumer health and medical information needs of its service community. The service community is defined as Western Maine community members, health professional, area students, and Stephens Memorial Hospital patients and their families.
